Why I am Phatpenguin

I am going to put some more information about my blog, as Emily recently started her own blog and that may generate traffic to mine. I am hoping to help her learn more about computers and the internet, although I know her goals are more to get her opinions and feelings down in written format and get comments.

I want to explain why my page name is Phatpenguin. In the computer world, everyone needs a nickname or handle. This name usually needs to be something geeky or represent a part of your life or interests that only your closest friends would know. I have had several such handles, but none have stuck. For awhile I used myownworstenemy. Then I started using Silvergunsuperman. These names are still used on Slashdot and some other older computer sites. When I started getting serious about online computer games, I found that many games do not allow handles to be more than a certain number of characters. This forced me to pick a new handle.

For those who don't know, I am very serious about my work in computers. I use Linux. It is my favorite operating system. I hate everything Microsoft except the Xbox. Windows was horrible until Windows 2000. XP was an improvement, but Vista is horrible again. Linux, on the other hand, keeps getting better and better. The mascot for Linux is a penguin named Tux. That is the penguin part. In another life I had aspirations of creating electronica music with my computer and midi mixer, turntable and keyboard. I created several songs under the name DJ Semiphatt. This name comes from an old joke with some friends, and I don't want to make this post even more boring by explaining that name. A combination of these two names is my inspiration for the name Phatpenguin.

I know everyone else has cutesy nicknames and family oriented stuff. I am a guy, and have guy stuff. I have a feeling a lot of people will look at this out of curiosity and then give up because it is so heavy on the geek side of things. This is ok. Until today I have only put 2 posts, and at least now I will have 3.

You've been a closet blogger for too long! Glad to know you have a blog and hoping that you'll update it more than once every 6 months! Great name oh, and if you hate Microsoft so badly why don't you get a Mac? PC's SUCK! Keep the posts coming!

I am signed in under Kim and much to lazy to log out and log back in. But this is Jim. I thought your name was your stage name for jamming on Rock Band or whatever it is called.

I think MACs are lame. They used to be better (ie designed for true computer geeks) but now they are sell outs...just another microsoft. I dont use Linex because i am computer challenged but I make the switch oneday ...hopefully soon.

I posted again in response to your comment, Robilyn. I had too much to say to put it in a comment only.

Robilyn, I can't get to your blog. I tried to go look at it, and it says you need to invite me. My email is scottwleonard@gmail.com. If you don't want to invite me, fine ;)

ps. Emily says Natalie hasn't been invited either.
